This fantastic sign was sent to me by one of my high school friends, who thought I would appreciate the rich irony of the wording.
Personally, I really like the juxtaposition of the headline "Any Size Fountain Drink" with the modifier "Includes 44oz cup." So– is this to imply that I can have any size fountain drink I want, as long as that drink is 44oz in size, or as long as it will fit into a 44oz cup? What if I do not wish to purchase 44oz of any liquid in this store? I feel like I don't want them telling me I can get "any size fountain drink," then taking back their offer by saying I have to put this drink into a 44oz container. Too much pressure, really.
Because here's the thing– 44oz of anything is kind of a lot.
–44oz of soda with sugar? I am just way too old to consume that many calories at one time.
–44oz of Diet Coke? I would go flying off into the stratosphere from that much caffiene.
–44oz of diet soda that is not Diet Coke? I think I might go blind from that much aspartame.
–44oz of that seltzer water they use to carbonate beverages? That's just silly.
I can't think of another thing that they sell at places like 7-11 that might have this sign. Can you? The only possible explanation I have for this strange signage is that they might be offering to GIVE me a "collector's item" type of plastic 44oz cup that I can take with me and use later, but if that is the case, that is not indicated by the photo of the cup on the sign.
So, confusion all around, and a little insight into all the things I will and will not drink. Simply fascinating, isn't it? I think the real message here is: you may have "any size" beverage for 79 cents, as long as we agree that by "any size," we all mean 44 oz.
