This ad was sent to me by my friend Katie from grad school. You'll remember Katie from her outstanding photo "French Bread on Windshield."
Katie has excellent taste in absurdity, and I give her full credit for this strange wine warehouse mailer.
Yes, I did say "wine warehouse mailer." Apparently this wine store is having a father's day sale on wine, and whatever graphic designer put this together thought "father's day– father holding toddler at the beach," forgetting the fact that you probably should not go to the beach with a toddler after you've had wine. Actually, it is probably a good idea to be in full control of your mental faculties anytime you have a toddler out in public (or near water), is that not correct? Would you want your boozed-up dad throwing you up in the air? I think not.
Also, it is worth mentioning that is says right there on the ad– no one under 21 will be admitted to this event. So– is the dad supposed to go to the wine warehouse before or after he takes the toddler to the beach, and will this wine company be providing a sitter? I'm totally confused.
Finally, and this is just the digital strategy and marketing person in me noticing this– this store does have a website (I checked), so why is it not on this mailer? Wouldn't a mailing to your community be a great time to get potential customers over to your website so they could see if you had anything they might like (other than wine)? This kind of thing is exactly why I am now developing a series of online courses for small businesses so they can get organized and do their own digital strategy. If you have a small business, I would love to hear from you, just to try to find out your main challenges with all this online stuff.
