I was away from my computer all day today because my awesome husband Stephan Cox was running the NEW YORK MARATHON! His time was 4:02, which is pretty amazing for a first-time runner. Even MORE amazing was the fact that he maintained the exact same pace (a 9:13 mile) for almost every mile of the race. How did he do that, people? HOW? My dad came up from Kentucky to watch the race with me, and now we are all exhausted (maybe we are sympathy exhausted? I’m not sure. We probably walked a total of five miles trying to spot him, which we did at one point, but otherwise there is absolutely no reason for us to be tired). Send healing vibes to Stephan, who I’m sure is going to be sore tomorrow! We are still trying to figure out where, exactly, the “finish line” photos went (you have to buy them, so I’m sure we will find out), but you will be the first to know when I get some.
Also, watching a long race is kind of hard, did you know? Lots of jostling, and neck craning, and timing where your runner might be at that moment. Just so you know, I took lots of pictures, but the crowd was so huge, most of them look like this:
This is not even a photo I took– it just looks cool and approximates what I think is going to be inside my camera when I download the pictures.
So, I don’t think there is going to be a “photo journal” kind of a thing, though The Guardian always does a nice job, so you should definitely go look at their pictures if you are so inclined.
Also, I did want to point out that I saw a guy in a full pink gorilla suit (including mask) at mile 16. He looked pretty energetic still, so I thought I was going to have to eat my mocking words about how STUPID IT IS TO RUN IN A GORILLA SUIT, INCLUDING A MASK. I asked Stephan if he saw that guy and if he in fact finished strong and made me eat my mockery, and he said “Oh no, by mile 20 he was walking with his head down, like a sad, sad gorilla,” so that made me laugh all over again. I am rarely wrong when it comes to person in a pink gorilla costume, you know.
Congratulations Stephan Cox! Awesome job!!!
